new bike new bike!
I can't believe I forgot to mention it.
I got a new bike. My old bike was stolen right before winter break, locked outside my apartment. Sadness. I have a lot of memories attached to that bike. Luckily, I haven't become so grad-student-poor that I've stopped my renter's insurance, so I got to get a nice new bike.
It's nice. It's my first true road bike, and I'll have to get used to it - and i finally upgraded to cleats and nice pedals, and i'll be falling over a couple times in the next week. A Salsa La Raza:
The best part is the most banal - I don't have to drive to school everyday. It's been a drag.
the faculty is weird
A good month and a half after we presented our theses from first quarter, the faculty convened to give us feedback on it (and personal statements). Even though I think my personality is really starting to come out in my work this year, David Kelley told me there was a membrane between (what he perceives to be) my personality and my work. Apparently, and this is a quote, there's some thing about me that makes him think I'm about to burst out into a Cyndi Lauper song.
Besides the fact that I love that he said that because it's a great story, what does that mean? Should I be insulted? Flattered? Girls do just want to have fun, after all.
And then I met with Michael Barry, who is one of the more (most?) helpful of the faculty members, at least for me, and he told me that he finds me really opaque. And I always thought that my thoughts showed too much.
Combine that with being told that I'm pretty mellow, and don't seem like I'm from the east coast, and I may have an identity crisis. And my work is getting kind of weird. Funny, but weird. More on that soon.
