procrastinating
Oh, and I'm procrastinating. In case you were wondering.

Interim thesis presentations are on Tuesday. I have to figure out what I'm doing for that. For those who haven't heard, I've been looking at why people don't where (non-functional) hats these days, and what that's all about, and also making hats.

The problem is that the 2 halves of the project (research and thinking vs. hats made) don't necessarily go together. Oops. So I'm trying to be smart between now and then and connect the dots which may not actually exist.

You may even see some pics of hats up here soon, now that I finally got my digital camera back and it seems to be working. Did I mention that not only did it break and Frys stole it from me for MY ENTIRE TRIP TO ASIA, but then when I came back it was still broken. They said that they had "fixed" it, but no. So I had to go another 2 months sans digital camera. I think having my 35mm on my trip was actually a bonus, but now that I'm doing work and needing to document stuff, it's a problem. But I got it back, and they replaced the innards, and it works, thank god.

Looking forward to getting back to the east coast. Flying back on the 15th. Hopefully with lots of beautiful presents that I will have made between now and then.

the problem with group projects...
... is that you don't get to pick who is in your group.

Someone in my group project for Design for Autism this quarter sent this email (we were working on our final presentation which went well, thanks.)

Hi Guys,

Things to keep in perspective with the presentation.

We have 15 minutes to present
-With 25 slides, that's 36 seconds per slide
An average, clear speaking speed is 150 words per minute
-That means we have 90 words to describe a slide.
An average sentence is 15 words.
-That gives us a max of six sentences to describe a slide.
Assuming 4 video slides at 30 seconds each, we have 13 minutes for text
slides.
-21 text slides * 6 sentences * 15 words = 1900 words.
-This is the equivalent of a single spaced 4 page paper read
straight through, non-stop (Ugh!).
-Adding time for pauses for breath, slide transition, emphasis and
realistic subject changes, call it 2/3 of that.
-This means we should be able to write out EVERYTHING we are going
to say in under 1200 words, leaving us 48 words to describe each slide. Just
writing three to four clear sentences in the notes for each slide will give
us our exact wording for the entire presentation.

It works really well if you read it out loud REALLY LOUD and fast. S/he has volume control issues, too.

The project ended up being super successful. And there might be an article in the NY Times about it! How cool would that be? That's all the fame I could ever ask for.

(one of our early prototypes for our solution... we ended up making a "hugging chair," as Terry Winograd, the most famous person in the audience, called it.)
